First-Timer’s Guide: What actually happens during the first session?
Feeling nervous about starting therapy? This first-timer’s guide walks you through what to expect in your first session and how to ease into the process at your own pace.

First-Timer’s Guide: What actually happens during the first session?
Starting therapy for the first time can bring up a mix of thoughts and feelings, curiosity, uncertainty, maybe even a little nervousness. That’s completely natural. When something is new and personal, it’s normal to wonder how it will unfold.
At Dr.Dropin, we aim to make that first step feel as safe and comfortable as possible. So here’s a look at what you can expect from your first session.
A calm beginning
Your first session is simply a starting point. There’s no expectation to share everything all at once, and no pressure to explain things perfectly.
It’s okay to take your time.
Most sessions begin with a brief introduction. Your psychologist will explain how they work, what confidentiality means, and what you can expect from the process. You’re always welcome to ask questions, whether they feel big or small.
A space to begin your story
You’ll be invited to talk about what brought you to therapy, but how you do that is entirely up to you.
Some people arrive with clear thoughts they want to share. Others aren’t quite sure where to begin, and that’s okay too. You might simply start with how you’ve been feeling lately, or what’s been on your mind.
Your therapist may ask gentle questions to better understand your experiences, but there’s no pressure to go deeper than you feel ready for.
Moving at your pace
Therapy isn’t about rushing. It’s about creating a space where you feel comfortable enough to explore things gradually.
You won’t be expected to talk about anything that feels too difficult. Trust builds over time, and your pace matters.
Understanding what you need
Together, you’ll begin to explore what you might want from therapy.
This doesn’t have to be a clear or fixed goal. It might be something as simple as wanting to feel a bit more like yourself again, or to better understand your thoughts and emotions.
Your therapist is there to support you in shaping that direction, not to decide it for you.
Noticing how it feels
The first session is also an opportunity for you to notice how you feel in the space.
Do you feel listened to? Comfortable enough to speak? There’s no right or wrong answer, just your experience.
Finding the right therapist can take time, and it’s okay if it doesn’t feel like a perfect fit straight away.
A gentle ending
As the session comes to a close, you may talk briefly about next steps if you’d like to continue. Or you might simply take some time to reflect on how the experience felt.
There’s no pressure to decide everything immediately.
A final thought
Starting therapy doesn’t require you to have all the answers, or even the right words.
It simply asks you to show up, just as you are.
And for a first step, that’s more than enough.
