How to Get a Private ADHD Assessment in the UK (No GP Referral Needed)
If you suspect you have ADHD, you may be wondering where to start. In the UK you can book a private ADHD assessment directly, without a GP referral and often with a much shorter wait than the NHS. Here is how the process typically works, using the Dr.Dropin pathway as an example.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book an Adult ADHD assessment with Dr.Dropin directly, starting with a free Discovery Call. Some people still choose to tell their GP, particularly if they hope to be supported by NHS services afterwards.
Step by step: what the assessment involves
1. Free Discovery Call
A free 15-minute call to explain what you are looking for, discuss costs and check that an assessment is right for you. It also allows the team to identify any exclusion criteria or urgent clinical risk concerns.
2. Pre-assessment questionnaires
You complete digital questionnaires about current and childhood symptoms, daily functioning, mental health and substance use. These are reviewed by an HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist.
3. Clinical assessment and diagnostic interview
Over two sessions, your psychologist explores your history, education, work, health and everyday difficulties, and considers other possible explanations for your symptoms. The diagnostic interview looks at current and childhood ADHD symptoms and how they affect your life. Sessions are available in person in Fulham or by video.
4. Collateral information
A structured interview with someone who knew you in childhood, such as a parent or sibling, helps confirm your developmental history. If that is not possible, historical records such as school reports can be reviewed.
5. Report and feedback
Your psychologist brings all the evidence together, writes a comprehensive report and talks you through the diagnostic conclusion, formulation and recommendations in a dedicated feedback session.
Will I definitely get a diagnosis?
No. A reliable assessment can end with or without a diagnosis, and steps may be extended if there are other conditions to consider. The aim is an accurate answer, not a particular outcome.
What happens after a diagnosis?
Dr.Dropin provides psychological assessment and diagnosis, and does not prescribe ADHD medication. If you want to explore medication, we can support you with a referral to an appropriately qualified prescribing clinician. Whether an NHS GP will accept a private diagnosis or a Shared Care Agreement cannot be guaranteed, so we recommend checking with your GP practice beforehand.
Many people also find non-drug approaches helpful, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, structure in everyday routines, mindfulness and physical activity.
What to check before choosing a provider
- Clinicians are registered with a professional body such as the HCPC
- The service is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
- The assessment follows recognised UK clinical guidelines
- Pricing is transparent and covers the full pathway
- It is clear what happens after the assessment
