Private vs NHS ADHD Assessment: What Is the Difference?
If you think you may have ADHD, there are two main routes to an assessment in the UK: through the NHS, or privately. Each has advantages, and the right choice depends on your situation. This guide explains the main differences.
The NHS route
On the NHS, you usually start with a referral from your GP. The assessment is free at the point of use, but waiting times for adult ADHD assessments can be long and vary between areas. In England, some people can ask their GP about choosing an alternative NHS-funded provider through the Right to Choose scheme. Eligibility and availability vary, so it is worth asking your GP practice.
The private route
A private assessment can be booked directly, without a GP referral, and appointments are usually available much sooner. You pay for the assessment yourself, so it is important to understand exactly what the price includes.
Key differences at a glance
- Referral: the NHS usually requires a GP referral; a private assessment does not
- Waiting time: NHS waits can be long; private appointments are typically available at shorter notice
- Cost: the NHS is free at the point of use; private assessments are self-funded
- Format: private providers may offer both video and in-person appointments
- After diagnosis: treatment and medication pathways differ, and NHS acceptance of a private diagnosis is not guaranteed
Will my NHS GP accept a private diagnosis?
Many people ask this. Acceptance of a private diagnosis, or of a Shared Care Agreement for medication, is at the discretion of the NHS GP practice and cannot be guaranteed. We recommend checking with your GP practice before you start, so you know what to expect.
Which route is right for you?
Consider how long you are able to wait, your budget, and whether you want to explore medication. Whichever route you choose, make sure the assessment is carried out by appropriately qualified, registered clinicians and follows recognised UK clinical guidelines.
