Can I stop underarm sweating permanently?
The underarms contain a large number of sweat glands, making them one of the most common areas for excessive sweating and whilst sweating is essential for temperature regulation, some people produce far more than their body actually requires, leading to embarrassment, clothing stains and reduced confidence.
Why don’t anti-perspirants work?
Anti-perspirants do work for most people as unlike deodorants, which simply reduce odour, antiperspirants help limit the amount of sweat reaching the skin’s surface. Some people will require stronger prescription products however if over the counter anti-perspirants don’t help.
Medical treatments for excessive underarm sweating
There are several medical treatments available for persistent underarm sweating. Injectable treatments can temporarily block the nerve signals responsible for activating sweat glands with other options including prescription medications and treatments that use electrical currents to reduce sweat production. The most suitable approach depends on the severity of symptoms and individual circumstances.
Is there a permanent cure?
Unfortunately, there is no single solution that works forever for everyone. Some treatments provide long-lasting improvement, while others require repeat sessions. Surgical procedures are occasionally considered in severe cases but are generally reserved for situations where other treatments have failed.
Everyday strategies
Wearing breathable fabrics, choosing loose-fitting clothing and identifying personal triggers may help reduce discomfort. Managing stress can also be beneficial, as anxiety is a common trigger for excessive sweating.
Final thoughts
Although there is no guaranteed permanent cure for underarm sweating, there are numerous effective treatment options available which can be explained by a dermatologist or GP.
